Ronald B. Shankland Sr.

January 19, 1936 – April 28, 2024

Ronald Shankland Sr., Manteno, Ill., gently passed away on Sunday, 28 April 2024, at his son’s home in the presence of loved ones.

Ron Sr. was a loving father, father-in-law, grandfather (Bopah), great-grandfather, and dear friend to so many in his community.

Born in Newton, Iowa, on January 19, 1936, during a terrible blizzard, Ron was one of four children born to Vern and Gyneth (Wisely) Shankland. His parents and sisters, Jacqulyn Williams and Jo Dee Caliendo, preceded him in death. Sadly, Ron was also preceded in death by his middle son, Ralph Shankland.

Surviving are his sons, Ron Jr. (Michelle) Shankland of Bellevue, Neb., and John (Amy) Shankland of Noblesville, Ind. He leaves six granddaughters, Tyffini (Chad) Dalton of Lincoln, Neb.; Ashley (Josh) George and Amanda Shankland Harper of Parson, Kan.; Jessica (Chris) Mioton of Nashville, Tenn.; Joyce (Daniel) Golden of Fort Scott, Kan.; and Maggie Shankland of Kankakee, Ill. He leaves two grandsons, Jonathon Shankland and Jacob Shankland, both of Noblesville, Ind.

Ron has 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his younger brother, John Shankland, of Paw Paw, Ill.

Ron graduated from Batavia High School, Class of 1953, in Batavia, Ill. He was especially proud of his time of honorable services in the United States Marine Corps from February 18, 1954, until February 17, 1957. He was a Field Artillery Fire Control Marine in the 3rd Armored Amphibian Company, 3rd Amtrac Battalion, 1st Marine Division (Reinforcement), Fleet Marine Force, Pacific. Ron was deployed to Korea as the Korean War ended and spent his time there on post where the Imjin River joins the Han River downstream of Seoul, South Korea. Semper Fi, Marine!

A Celebration of Life will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Central Time on June 22 at the Chatterbox Café in Bourbonnais, Ill.
