The REPORTER

Westfield dropped its first game of the season last Saturday, falling at Brownsburg 17-13 in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference battle of the top two teams in Class 6A.

The Shamrocks scored first, with Mikeah Webster running four yards for a touchdown midway through the first quarter, with Owen Wright kicking the extra point. The Bulldogs got on the board with 9:05 left in the second period on a two-yard TD run, then made a two-point conversion run to lead 8-7.

Wright kicked a 28-yard field goal right before halftime to give the Rocks a 10-8 lead at the break. Wright booted another field goal, this one from 21 yards, right before the end of the third quarter.

But Brownsburg took the kickoff 54 yards for a touchdown for the last play of the quarter and went into the fourth quarter up 14-13. The Bulldogs scored the only points of the fourth quarter on a field goal, not allowing Westfield any points.

Carsen Melvin threw for 131 yards. Deacon King led the rushing with 62 yards.

The Shamrocks are 3-1 in HCC play and 5-1 overall. Westfield hosts Avon Friday.
