Westfield got off to a hot start at Fox Prairie Saturday, and the result was a second invitational victory in as many weekends.
The No. 5-ranked Shamrocks won the Noblesville Bob Spacey Invitational, carding a score of 298. Westfield edged out two other top five teams, No. 1 Carmel and No. 3 Noblesville, to win the tournament.
“We really got off to a really hot start,” said ‘Rocks coach Josh Bryant. “Through five holes, we were five under as a team and turned at nine three under. Like every tough day of golf, you run into a few holes and the back nine here at Fox Prairie here can be fairly difficult.”
Westfield was led by Noah Shanteau, who finished in second place with a score of 72. Ethan Lutz was next in line, shooting 74.
“Our fifth man, Ethan Lutz, played outstanding today, shooting 74, and that’s really big for us,” said Bryant.
The Greyhounds finished second with a team score of 301, but had the individual champion. Kevin Stone carded an even-par 71 to get the first-place plaque.
The third-place finisher gets a plaque, but this year there will be two plaques. Noblesville’s Clay Merchent and Richmond’s Jake Miller both shot 73s. The usual format calls for a playoff to decide third place, but the two golfers were still tied after three holes, so it was decided to call it a draw.
As a team, the Millers scored 306. All five of their players finished under 80.
No. 6-ranked Hamilton Southeastern placed fifth with a 319; Drew Alexander was the Royals’ low man with a 77. Guerin Catholic and 14th-ranked Fishers both scored 330. Matthew Godfrey shot 80 for the Golden Eagles, while Shivom Patel carded 79 for the Tigers.
Hamilton Heights scored 403. Hudson Hochstedler led the Huskies with a 98.
