Rocks, Tigers repeat as regional champions

The Westfield and Fishers girls tennis teams defended their regional titles on Wednesday.

The No. 4-ranked Shamrocks swept No. 16 Delta 5-0 at the Noblesville regional for their second consecutive trophy. No. 1 singles Alexandra Grilliot was a 6-0, 6-0 winner, along with No. 2 Isla Harvey 6-0, 6-4 and No. 3 Juliette Grilliot 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, No. 1 Jenna Berry and Bella Rivera came back to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, while No. 2 doubles Addi Kooi and Ellen Volz were victorious 6-4, 6-1.

Westfield travels to Homestead on Saturday for the semi-state, where it will play the No. 19-ranked host Spartans for a place in the state finals.

The No. 6-ranked Tigers beat New Castle 4-1 to win the Mt. Vernon regional. Fishers has now won five consecutive regional championships. The Tigers travel to the Center Grove semi-state on Saturday to play No. 12 Bishop Chatard, with the winner going to state.

At Lebanon, No. 2 Carmel lost a close regional final 3-2 to No. 1 Brebeuf Jesuit. The Greyhounds won both of the doubles matches, with the Braves taking all three singles matches.

In individual play, University’s Laurel Buttrick won the Lebanon sectional with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over South Vermillion’s Jaci McClain. Buttrick is 19-3 and plays at the North Central individual regional next Saturday, June 7.
