Rocks, Tigers finish regular season with easy wins

The Westfield softball team came back to overwhelm McCutcheon 13-4 in a Thursday home game that finished the regular season.

The Mavericks led 4-0 midway through the fourth inning, but the Shamrocks blasted back in the bottom of the fourth by scoring nine runs. Reese Mahannah scored the first run, getting home after Adelyn Kurth reached on an error. Reese Gettinger scored on a wild pitch, then Makayla Watson doubled in Kurth and Avery Banas to tie the game at 4-4.

Watson and Sofia Easterhaus scored when Chloe Tanner reached on an error, putting the ‘Rocks in front 6-4. Dylan Todd was sent home by Gettinger’s RBI groundout, then Kurth singled in Annika Lawrence (running for Tanner) and Mahannah, giving Westfield a 9-4 lead.

The Shamrocks put up four more runs in the fifth inning. Mahannah tripled in Lawrence, then was sent home by a Kurth single. Banas singled in Kurth with a center field hit, and Watson finished things up with a left field hit to score Banas.

Watson had three hits, while Kurth had two hits. Tanner pitched a complete game for the win, striking out three.

Westfield is 12-12 and plays Zionsville Monday in the first round of Sectional 8 at Fishers.

Fishers wrapped up its regular season Thursday with an 11-4 home victory over Anderson.

The Indians led off the game with a home run, but the Tigers answered with four in the bottom of the inning. Kendall Jordan batted in Azstryd Alexander with a single, then later scored on a passed ball. Kate Murray tripled in Adrianne Cook, then Rosie Minges got home on Cate Summerfield’s RBI groundout.

Jordan singled in Alexander again in the second inning, putting Fishers ahead 5-2. Summerfield got a third-inning run by scoring on a wild pitch. Alexander led off the fourth inning with a center field homer and Murray blasted a three-run home run later, also scoring Jordan (who hit a double) and Cook. Grace Waltermann led off the fifth inning with a triple, then got home on Abby Shannon’s RBI groundout.

Jordan and Cook both went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Alexander and Murray both had two hits. Katelyn Lewis hit a double. Murray got the pitching win, while Frankie Jackson struck out five in four innings of relief.

Fishers finished the regular season 15-10; the Tigers’ scheduled game with Pendleton Heights today was canceled. Fishers’ next game is Tuesday, when the Sectional 8 host Tigers play the winner of Monday’s Hamilton Southeastern-Noblesville game in the semifinals.
