WESTFIELD – The Westfield boys basketball team dominated its season-opener Saturday at CSI Gymnasium, beating Frankfort 87-17.
The Shamrocks were in control from the beginning, only allowing the Hot Dogs three points in the second half. Westfield led 18-2 after one quarter, then expanded its lead to 49-3 by halftime. Eight different players scored for the ‘Rocks in the half, with Drew Haffner putting in nine points.
“Really excited to play somebody,” said Westfield coach Shane Sumpter. “It’s been a couple weeks just practicing against ourselves. So, it was exciting to get in the gym and play somebody. Thought we got off to a really good start. Defensively I thought we were really good.”
The Shamrocks added 38 more points in the second half, the entirety of which was played under a running clock. A total of 10 Westfield players scored during the game, with four reaching double figures.
Jalen Malone led the way with 17 points, while Brock Detamore scored 12 points. Drew Haffner and Luke Vandegriff both added 11 points.
“Jalen had a really good summer for us and we’re expecting a lot of good things,” said Sumpter.
Logan Sumpter hit three 3-pointers for nine points. Two seniors from last year’s team also added points: Durante Morton scored eight and Will Harvey totaled six.
Westfield plays two road games this week, traveling to Pendleton Heights on Tuesday and to Zionsville on Friday for its Hoosier Crossroads Conference opener.
