Westfield had a tough assignment for its season opener, as the Class 6A No. 2 Shamrocks hosted 5A No. 1 Cathedral Friday at Riverview Health Stadium.
The Irish beat the Shamrocks 14-0, scoring all of their points in the third quarter. Cathedral held Westfield to 39 yards of rushing, but the ‘Rocks did have 138 yards passing. Cole Ballard totaled 109 yards through the air, making 11 of 24 attempts, and also led the rushing with 30 yards.
Micah Hauser had 16 tackles for the game, with four solo stops and 12 assists. He was one of four Westfield players to get at least 10 tackles: Tyler Dikos had 14 tackles (five solo, nine assist), while Alex Wolf and Bryson Hoover both made 10 stops. Both had one solo tackle and assisted on nine.
Shamrocks coach Jake Gilbert emphasized that his team will come out better with the loss, taking it as a growing opportunity. Gilbert said the biggest stat was that the ‘Rocks were 0-for-4 in the red zone, and weren’t quite in the shape they needed to be in.
Westfield will travel to Harrison next Friday for its first away game of the season. The Raiders beat Terre Haute South 27-7 in their opener.
