‘Rocks drop double OT game to Eagles

Westfield went to the limit and beyond Friday night, as the Class 4A No. 7 Shamrocks hosted 4A No. 2 Zionsville in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference opener for both teams.
After regulation, the game was tied at 53-53. And one overtime period wouldn’t be enough: The Eagles needed double overtime before they were able to escape CSI Gymnasium with a 67-65 win over Westfield.
The Shamrocks led 13-7 after the first quarter, with Cam Haffner scoring seven points. Zionsville chipped away at the lead during a high-scoring second period, but Westfield was able to stay ahead 30-29 at halftime. Braden Smith hit three 3-pointers during that quarter.
The Eagles held a 44-41 advantage after three periods. The ‘Rocks came back tie it up in the game’s waning seconds and had an opportunity for the last shot, but it didn’t go. Both teams scored six points in the first overtime, but Zionsville pulled ahead in the second extra period, taking a 65-61 lead with 1:50 left and hanging on from there.
Smith scored 26 points, while Haffner scored 13; he also made three 3-pointers. Nic Depasquale, playing his first game of the season, added 10 points.
Westfield is 1-1 and plays tonight at Kokomo.
