Westfield completed a Hoosier Crossroads Conference series sweep of Franklin Central on Thursday, beating the Flashes 11-7 in an away game.
The Shamrocks scored twice in the first inning and never trailed in the game. Austin Wessel stole ome to get Westfield’s first run, then Tyler Smitherman batted in Bryce Dorton. The ‘Rocks then added two more runs in the second, with Eli Patchett and Luke Hutson getting home after Payton Tamm reached on error.
Franklin Central got on the board with two runs in the second inning, but Westfield answered with a run in the fifth, when Kyle Pepiot scored after Hutson reached on error. The Shamrocks got three more runs in the fourth; Dorton scored on a bases-loaded walk, Patchett singled Jack Lawrence, and Smitherman scored on error.
Zach Collins got an RBI single in the fifth inning, sending Wessel home and giving Westfield a 9-3 lead. The Flashes made things interesting by scoring four runs in the sixth, but the Shamrocks stopped any comeback with two runs in the seventh. Collins cracked a double to left field to score Trey Anderson and Dorton.
Collins finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while Dorton totaled three runs. Wessel stole three bases. Tamm got the pitching win, going five innings while allowing only three hits.
Westfield is 2-0 in the conference and 2-1 overall. The Shamrocks will be off for Spring Break and return to action April 9 at Mount Vernon.
