After a tough game on Friday night, Westfield had to turn around and take a trip to Kokomo on Saturday night for a game with the Wildkats.
Shamrocks coach Shane Sumpter said this team “had a little bit of fatigued legs” on Saturday morning, after a double overtime loss to Class 4A No. 2 Zionsville, and was aware of the challenge. But 4A No. 7 Westfield was up to the challenge, pulling away in the fourth quarter to win 60-48 at Kokomo’s Memorial Gym.
Westfield got off to a good start, leading 17-10 after the first quarter and 29-22 at halftime. The Wildkats cut that lead to 41-38 after three periods, but a 19-point fourth quarter sealed the victory.
“We were able to spread it out a little bit and make some free throws down the stretch,” said Sumpter.
Cam Haffner led the scoring, with 19 points and three 3-pointers. Kai Butterworth added 14 points and Braden Smith had 12 points. Smith also collected seven rebounds and made five assists. Alex Romack helped out with nine points, five rebounds and two blocked shots.
“I thought we had some balance,” said Sumpter.
Westfield is 2-1 and is off until next Saturday, when the Shamrocks take on Homestead at Southport.
