Rocks begin season with HCC sweep of Flashes

The Westfield baseball team has played and won two games this season, and both of them are Hoosier Crossroads Conference game.

The Shamrocks completed a sweep of Franklin Central Thursday at Grand Park, winning the second game 6-3. Westfield scored its first run in the first inning; Beck Jordan batted in Matt Drozlek with a center field hit.

The Flashes tied the game in the top of the fifth inning, but the ‘Rocks blasted back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs. Johnny Ewing scored when Anthony Cimini reached on error after a bunt to make the score 2-1.

Caden Lindsey cracked a double to bring in Cimini, then later scored on Jordan’s RBI fielder’s choice. Ian Wilson singled into left field to score Drozlek, then Jordan got home when Ethan Colling drew a bases-loaded walk.

Owen Swinford pitched four innings for the win, tossing seven strikeouts against three hits.

Westfield is headed to Tennessee next week to play in a tournament. The ‘Rocks take on Mt. Juliet next Thursday for their first game.

Fishers opened its season Thursday by beating Bloomington South 4-3 at Grand Park.

The Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Luke Cherry led off with a base hit, then Trevor Hall was hit by a pitch. Carter Strole made a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners, then Cherry scored on Jase Ruggles’ safety squeeze. Ruggles reached safely when the throw pulled the Panthers’ second baseman off the base, and that allowed Hall to score.

Bloomington South scored in the top of the third inning, but Fishers added two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Deagan Repp drew a lead-off walk, then scored after Huston Dunn blasted a triple to center field. Zander Carnahan sent Dunn home with a center field hit.

The Panthers scored one run each in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Tigers held on for the win. Dunn finished the game with two hits. Owen Sanders pitched four and two-thirds innings to get the victory, striking out four.

Fishers plays a doubleheader with Fort Wayne Carroll today at Grand Park, with the first game starting at noon.

Carmel beat Covenant Christian 13-3 Thursday at Hartman Field.

The Greyhounds scored in six of the seven innings, starting with three runs in the first. Carmel added one run each in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, then ran away with the game by putting up six runs in the seventh.

Jacob Behm hit a double, while Parker Heaney had three RBIs on two hits. Evan Vogt went three innings for the win, striking out seven.

The ‘Hounds are off until next Thursday when they play at Brebeuf Jesuit.

Noblesville began play at the ETBCA Tournament in Knoxville, Tenn. Thursday with a 16-9 five-inning win over Hardin Valley Academy.

The Millers scored in all five innings, with one run each in the first and second. The Millers poured in nine runs in the fourth inning, including a two-run home run from Trevor Corbett and a three-run double from Luke Hagelskamp. Corbett also hit a solo homer in the first inning; he finished the game with four RBIs and was 4-for-4 at the plate.

McCoy Fulk and Aiden Reynolds both hit one double, while Corbett and Cole Schott both scored three runs. Ethan Kang got the pitching win.

Noblesville is 1-2 and plays Knoxville Catholic and Bearden this afternoon.

Guerin Catholic took care of Warren Central 8-2 Thursday in a game at Grand Park.

Both teams scored their first run in the second inning. The Golden Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the inning when Ben Canada got home after Brody Cain hit a sacrifice fly.

Guerin Catholic took the lead for good in the third inning. Carson Kail doubled Ian Taylor home, then Tate Troxell’s center field base hit brought in Kail. Jayce Cunningham scored on Liam Zonger’s RBI fielder’s choice.

Taylor scored a fourth-inning run on a wild pitch. The Golden Eagles put up three more runs in the sixth inning: Taylor got his third run on Troxell’s RBI groundout, Frankie Ryan singled in Cunningham and Canada scored on an error.

Luke Gremelspacher pitched four and a third innings, striking out four.

Guerin Catholic is 2-0 and will play two games at Grand Park today, taking on Zionsville at noon and Avon at 3 p.m.

University finished its week at the Legacy Project with a victory Thursday, beating the Louisville CEC Cougars 10-7 in its final game of the tournament in Panama City, Fla.

The Cougars scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the first inning. The Trailblazers tied the game in the top of the third; Ryan Castetter hit a two-out triple, then scored on a wild pitch.

CEC went up 3-1 in the bottom of the third with a two-run double, but University again tied the game in the top of the fourth. Sterling Davis batted in Cooper Cammack with a single, then Charlie Ranek went home after Finn Steiner hit a sacrifice fly.

The Blazers took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Beckett Suh hit a double, then later scored on Davis’ left field hit. The Cougars scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings to lead 7-4, but University came roaring back in the top of the seventh with six runs.

Davis batted in the first run, sending Cammack home with a right field double. Ranek scored after Griffin Wright drew a bases-loaded walk, then Davis and Oliver Kingery each got home when Cooper Burnett reached on an error, putting the Trailblazers up 8-7. Castetter then reached on another error to send Wright and Burnett home.

Davis went 3-for-4, batting three runs. Ranek also hit a double. Hunter Canning got the pitching win, throwing two innings and allowing one hit.

University is 3-1 and plays its next game Wednesday at Cascade.
