Robert William Keck

January 2, 1941 – August 16, 2024

Robert William Keck, 83, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2024, after a courageous battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Born January 2, 1941, his spirit was strengthened by his love for hard work, teaching, farming, political debate, sunrises and sunsets, dark beer, all sports, and cheering for his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes. Dr. Keck valued his academic life as a professor in the IUPUI School of Science, where he taught Biology and Plant Physiology and spent some years in the Dean’s office. But above all, his greatest love was for his family.

His sense of humor remained undiminished throughout his illness. During every encounter with his oncology team, palliative care team, or hospice team, Bob was known for lightening the mood by stating, “I’m only here for the beer!” It was his resilience, grace, and acceptance of his situation that will be remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.

When asked if there were any unfulfilled dreams, Robert wished for an Oktoberfest, and loved ones rallied to make it happen. In May, fun times were had by all with beer, brats, pretzels, and homemade German potato salad. This gave Bob a chance to interact with those he loved the most.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Juanita. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on the 30th of August. He was cherished by his children, Robert Keck and his wife Beth, and Julie Keck and her husband John Champley. He was loved by his grandchildren, John and his wife Julia Keck, Katie Keck, Nathan Champley, and Bethany Champley. He delighted in his great-grandchild, Robert James Keck, who was born on his birthday. He appreciated the friendship with his brother, William Keck, and his husband, Jeff McCowan.

He was truly a special man who will be profoundly missed.

In lieu of flowers, please honor Robert’s legacy through kind gestures, love for your family, and a passion for life’s simple wonders. In addition, donations to Bethlehem Lutheran Church are welcome. Church address: 526 E. 52nd St., Indianapolis, IN 46205.

A celebration of life will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Sunday, August 25 from noon to 2 p.m. Please wear purple, his favorite color, or a Hawaiian print shirt, his wardrobe staple.
