Ring the bells & celebrate our country’s Constitution Sept. 17

The Daughters of the American Revolution, Jonathan Jennings Chapter of Carmel invite the public to join them for a Bells Across America event next week.

The event will take place Tuesday, Sept. 17 at the West Bell Tower at Coxhall Gardens, 2000 W. 116th St., Carmel. The program will begin at 3:30 p.m. with the bell ringing at 4 p.m.

Take time to reflect and celebrate the foundational document of national governance, the United States Constitution. This national observance was initiated by DAR in 1955 by petitioning the U.S. Congress to dedicate Sept. 17 to 23 of each year to the commemoration of Constitution Week. It was adopted by Congress and signed into public law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on Aug. 2, 1956.

The celebration’s goals are to encourage study of the events that led to the framing of the Constitution, remind the public that the Constitution is the basis of America’s great heritage and the foundation for its way of life, and emphasize U.S. citizens’ responsibility to protect, defend and preserve the U.S. Constitution.
