Winner announced in Fifth District’s Congressional Art Competition . . .
Congresswoman Susan W. Brooks recently hosted a reception at the Art Institute of Indianapolis where she congratulated the Fifth District winner of the 2018 Congressional Art Competition, Jiwon Yu, a sophomore from Carmel High School. Jiwon’s piece, “Adolescence, womenhood,” was selected by a team of local professional judges: KP Singh, an artist, Casey Cronin, a photographer, and Diana Staver, a professor from the Art Institute of Indianapolis. “Adolescence, womenhood” will hang in the U.S. Capitol Building for the next year along with the winning entries from each congressional district around the country.
“This nationwide high school art competition is such a great opportunity to highlight and recognize the artistic talent of the students in the Fifth Congressional District,” said Brooks. “This year, I am thrilled to announce Jiwon Yu, a skilled sophomore from Carmel High School, as the winner of this year’s Congressional Art Competition for her colorful and intricately detailed portrait of a girl navigating the different emotions associated with adolescence. Jiwon created “Adolescence, womenhood” using colored pencils and mastered blending colors in order to create a scene that shows our close relationship with nature. I’m proud that this impressive piece will represent the Fifth District of Indiana in the U.S. Capitol building for the next year and look forward to sharing it with Hoosiers who come to visit our nation’s capital and my colleagues in Congress.”
In addition, Brooks announced that the following pieces placed in the Congressional Art Competition and will hang in her district offices in Carmel and Anderson:
- 2nd Place: “Grace Behind the Lace” by Amanda Englert, Pike High School junior, teacher Myron Cochran
- 3rd Place: “Edna, Missing You Darling” by Victoria Enstrom, Eastern Howard High School sophomore, teacher Andrea Chambers
- 4th Place: “Alleyway in Fortville” by Madison Schade, Hamilton Southeastern High School junior, teacher Angela Fritz
- Honorable Mention: “The Next Play, Running Back #24” by Victoria Enstrom, Eastern Howard High School sophomore, teacher Andrea Chambers
- Honorable Mention: “Freedom” by Joshua Bull, Liberty Christian School freshman, teacher Beth Ann Webb
- Honorable Mention: “Sanctuary” by Chayton Davidson, Hamilton Southeastern junior, teacher Angela Fritz
About the Congressional Art Competition
Each spring, a nationwide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Congressional Art Competition is an opportunity to recognize and encourage artistic talent nationwide, as well as in our congressional district. The Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.
