Accessible, sensory-friendly event to support adaptive recreation programs
Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation (CCPR) invites the community to attend its annual Adaptive 5K at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, May 17 at Central Park, 1195 Central Park Drive West. The course is fully accessible for participants who utilize wheelchairs, walkers or other mobility aids, and the event is sensory-friendly.
“Even though my role was behind the scenes, I could see the joy and impact the Adaptive 5K had on everyone involved,” CCPR Inclusion Instructor Quinn Sever said. “This event gives people of all abilities a chance to participate in something that’s often not accessible. Watching athletes push themselves and volunteers cheer them on was incredibly moving. It reminded me how powerful inclusion can be – and it personally inspired me to give my all in every part of my life.”
CCPR’s Adaptive 5K welcomes people with and without disabilities to participate in a welcoming, positive environment. Individual support is available for participants, if needed. Proceeds will go toward CCPR’s continued effort to provide low-cost adaptive recreation programs for individuals with disabilities.
“The Adaptive 5K is designed for everyone,” CCPR Inclusion Program Supervisor Kelvin Solares said. “Our fully accessible, sensory-friendly course ensures that individuals who use mobility aids, have sensory needs, or simply want to show their support can all cross the finish line together.”
Volunteers are a vital part of the event’s success. If you are interested in volunteering for the Adaptive 5K, click here to create your CCPR volunteer account. Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian that is also registered. There are two categories of volunteers needed:
- Race Participant: Volunteers will be paired with a race participant to run or walk alongside them, supporting them through this huge accomplishment.
- Support Volunteer: Volunteers will assist in setting up and tearing down the event and with passing out water and encouragement along the race route.
Registration for the Adaptive 5K event is now open. Cost is $20 per participant. All ages are welcome to participate. Pre-registration is required, so get registered today.
The Adaptive 5K is made possible by the generous donations from the following sponsors: Pure Green, Brainstorm Print, Carmel Trophies Awards & Gifts, BeeFree Gluten-Free Bakery, and Tikal Homes.
