Dear Editor:
We Hoosiers care deeply about animals, from our state’s wildlife to the companions snoozing at our feet.
In fact, several towns across the state have taken a stand against the inhumane puppy mill industry by passing measures banning the retail sale of dogs. This action addressed the fact that the overwhelming majority of puppies for sale in pet stores come from mills where dogs are cruelly bred and treated.
However, the recently signed HB 1412 will reverse this crucial work by voiding all local ordinances prohibiting the sale of puppies at pet stores. The passage of HB 1412 is disheartening to those of us who champion the wellbeing of animals – but it has also revealed which legislators share our humane values.
I am proud to say that my legislator, State Senator Kyle Walker, voted against HB 1412, using his voice to protect companion animals.
As a voter who pays close attention, actions like this stand out. When Senator Walker is up for re-election, this is certainly something I’ll remember. In the meantime, please join me in thanking Senator Walker for his pro-animal action this session as we continue to fight for a more humane Indiana.
