Dear Editor:

With the upcoming election, many School Board races are on the ballot. Many people struggle making their choices if they don’t know the candidates. These races have a heavy impact on the community.

The primary issue facing our schools is financial. Despite an overwhelming vote in support of a tax referendum, poor financial management finds us in a $10 million deficit. We must find savings and revenue sources to support our teachers and staff this contract term. Our experienced Superintendent has helped us identify issues and a school finance expert to lead us out of this situation, but it will take focus, business acumen, statehouse connections, and effective communication with stakeholder communities to succeed.

I ask your vote for Greg Lannan, John Stewart, and Terry Tolle. Each of these candidates brings something unique to the role.

• Greg, a former graduate, returned to the area because of his own experience here as a student. He brings a data-oriented skill set and an understanding of labor markets that will be an asset to our schools. His connections within local and state government will help us identify new resources to supplement existing revenue streams.
• John is an experienced marketing consultant who has the goal of showcasing the extraordinary results of our students and staff to people within the community, and to people who may be considering locating to the area. We have lost students and the revenue that is attached to them. We need to encourage families to return to HSE for the BEST educational opportunities possible.
• Terry has previous HSE Board experience and the business and school finance experience to tackle this issue.
