January 14, 1930 – April 14, 2018
Phillip Dean Shafer, 88, Noblesville, passed away on Saturday, April 14, 2018 in Noblesville. He was born on January 14, 1930 to Dallas and Lena Shafer in Noblesville.
In his younger years, Phil attended Noblesville High School where he met Joanne, his future wife, and was a member of the football team. Phillip was a Purdue University graduate where he majored in Agriculture. He was the co-founder of United Feeds where he mentored many salesman to successfully follow in his footsteps. After 65 years, he retired from United Feeds leaving a lasting impression on everyone whose careers he touched.
Phil was known for the impression he made on everyone he met and was quickly nicknamed “Friendly Phil” by those who knew him best. He was a devoted dad who went above and beyond to provide his children a great life. He made a point to never miss Karen’s 4-H fairs or Doug’s games and he loved reliving each event afterwards as a family at Jim Dandy.
During the summer, Phil cherished spending time with his family on Elk Lake in Michigan. Whether it was early morning fishing with the grandchildren or just sipping iced tea on the porch admiring the dancing waters, Phil cultivated a tradition his family will uphold for generations to come.
Phil was a strong proponent and supporter of the 4-H program throughout Central Indiana.
He is survived by his daughter, Karen Montgomery; son, Douglas (Vicki) Shafer; sister-in-law, Jeanne Simons; grandchildren, Hilary (Wes) Shafer Herendeen, Brooke (fiancé – Scott Richards) Shafer and Chase Montgomery; and great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Jack Herendeen.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Joanne Shafer; and grandson, Gavin Montgomery.
