Philip Herbert Shelby

January 31, 1937 – February 18, 2020

Philip Herbert Shelby, 83, Noblesville, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, surrounded by his family and friends. He was born January 31, 1937 in Muncie to the late Herbert and Mildred Shelby.

Phil graduated from Royerton High School in 1955 and from Ball State University in 1959. On August 28, 1960, he married his college sweetheart, Chris Wolf, in Indianapolis. Phil taught physical education at Noblesville Junior High School from 1959 until his retirement in 1996. He started the wrestling program at Noblesville High School where he coached both football and wrestling. Phil was a member of the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame (1987), the Noblesville High School Athletic Hall of Fame (2019), and the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Noblesville Elks Lodge, a board member of Hamilton County Parks and Recreation, a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, and Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ in Indianapolis. Phil was an avid gardener. He also loved golf, fishing and playing cards. Phil was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Bears and Cubs.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Chris Shelby; his brother, Gerry Shelby (Patty), Pendleton; his sister, Diane Jester (Bud), Walkerton, Ind.; his children, Kent Shelby (Kelly), Marietta, Ga., Jackie Hudnall (Dean), Noblesville, Laurie Barnes (Damian), Henrico, Va., and Denise Adair (Ty), Starkville, Miss.; 14 grandchildren, Lindsay, Walker, Shane, Laura, Ashton, Shelby, Marshall, Tyler, Jessica, Rachel, Jordan, Carly, Carter and Mason; and two great-grandchildren, Will and Mayzie.

Phil Shelby was a husband, a father, a grandfather, a teacher, a coach, a friend and mentor to many, many people and will be greatly missed.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at Randall & Roberts Funeral Center, 1685 Westfield Road, Noblesville, with visitation from 10 a.m. to the time of service. Rev. Jonathan Basile will officiate. Burial will be at a later date at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Indianapolis.
