Smith is a graduate from Bethel College in Mishawaka and retired from education in June of 2016. That same month he started in Business Development as a Consultant for Indianapolis-based Performance Services, an engineering company specializing in Design Build, Solar Energy and Guaranteed Energy Savings opportunities for school corporations and municipalities.

Outside of his prowess in the education world, Smith is the Guerin Catholic boys basketball coach, served on the Noblesville Boys & Girls Club Board, is a 20-year member of the Hamilton County Fifty Club and was selected a recipient of the Indianapolis Colts Community Quarterback for giving back and strengthening the Hamilton County community in 2007. He chairs several of the Noblesville Elks Lodge committee and served six years as an officer. He is the past president of The Bridgewater Club Advisory Board, as well as an active member of the Bryce William Mitchell Memorial Foundation Board.
