September 13, 1934 – January 12, 2025
Peggie J. Long, 90, Cicero, passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at Riverwalk Village.
She was born on September 13, 1934, in Arcadia to the late Clifton “Bud” and Edna (Gasho) Newby. Peggie was united in marriage to Charles B. Long on September 26, 1953, and they were blessed to share 68 years of marriage before his passing in 2021.
Peggie retired as a bookkeeper, a role she enjoyed so much that it was more of a hobby than a job. Her love for numbers and attention to detail was evident throughout her life. She was also an active member of Atlanta Christian Church, where she found strength and community.
Peggie had a deep love for the outdoors and took great joy in working in her yard. She was especially fond of spending time with her grandchildren, whom she cherished deeply. She was known for her nurturing spirit, often raising bottle calves on the farm, and taking pride in caring for her animals. For over 20 years, Peggie also ran a 10,000-bird chicken house with dedication and love for the work. A phenomenal cook and baker, Peggie’s meals were legendary, and she could always be found feeding the farm help and anyone in need. Her love for her family and her generous heart were seen in everything she did.
In addition to her family and farm, Peggie enjoyed reading, especially her Bible, which she held dear. She was an avid fan of country music, particularly the songs of George Strait, and could often be found humming along to his tunes.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles B. Long; and her brother, William Newby.
Peggie is survived by her children, Paula Clark of Elwood, Ind., Lloyd (Keturah) Long of Cicero, and Charles Eugene (Debbie) Long of Cicero; grandchildren, Evan (Kaleigh) Long of Noblesville, Gracie (Cam) Haberly of Fort Wayne, Ind., Olivia Long of Cicero, and Caitlyn (Lucas) Gibbons of Elwood, Ind.; great-grandson, Joseph Haberly; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Peggie’s wishes were to be cremated, and her care has been entrusted to Hartley Funeral Homes. A private funeral service will be held at Hartley Funeral Home, Cicero.
Peggie will be deeply missed by all who knew her, and her legacy of love, faith, and devotion will live on in her family and community.
