The pairings are set for this weekend’s IHSAA state wrestling finals, which begin Friday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
Seven Hamilton County wrestlers are competing at state this year. That includes two in the 113-pound division. Carmel’s Isaac Ward takes on Whiteland’s Joey Buttler in a first-round battle of sophomores, while Westfield senior Dylan Driver will face Tell City’s Coy Hammack in the first round.
At 120 pounds, Westfield junior Braxton Vest faces Seeger senior Nathaniel Hennessey in the first round; both wrestlers have only lost two matches this season. Carmel junior Brac Hooper will wrestle Crown Point senior Stephen Roberson Jr. in his first-round match.
Greyhounds senior Robert Major will take on another senior, La Porte’s Jamaal Salaray in the first round at 160 pounds. Major is unbeaten for the season with a 37-0 record, one of two wrestlers in that weight class that is perfect for the season. Evansville Mater Dei junior Broderick Baumann is the other one, at 26-0 for the year.
At 195 pounds, Hamilton Southeastern junior Max Broom will face West Lafayette junior Connor Barket in the first round. Westfield junior Mihail Platonov takes on Gavit sophomore Edgar Decker in a first-round match at 285 pounds.
All first-round matches will take place on Friday, in two different sessions. The first session, for wrestlers in weight classes 106-145, begins at 11 a.m. The second sessions will have wrestlers in weight classes 152-285 compete, and start at 7 p.m. Friday winners advance to Saturday action, where they will wrestle three matches and be guaranteed a place in the top eight.
