Owens scores 32 in Carmel’s win over Westfield

A sensational shooting performance from senior Andrew Owens propelled Carmel to a win in its first home game in several weeks on Saturday.
The Class 4A No. 2 Greyhounds beat county rival Westfield 76-50 at the Eric Clark Activity Center, their first game there since Nov. 30. Carmel slowly built its lead over the course of the game, going up 18-9 after the first quarter and 42-26 at halftime.
Owens led the way for the ‘Hounds, scoring a career-high 32 points. He hit a 3-pointer in the first quarter, then let loose in the second period for 19 points, including four triples. Owens then added 10 more points in the third quarter; with two more 3s, Owens totaled seven long-range baskets for the night.
“I thought I shot it well,” said Owens. “My teammates got me open.” Owens said he felt confident in the game, after a good performance against Center Grove on Friday.
John Michael Mulloy added 18 points and also led the boards with seven rebounds. Owens pulled five rebounds. Karsten Windlan dished out seven assists.
“I thought we shot the ball well,” said Carmel coach Ryan Osborn. “I thought out execution was good.”
Senior Zach Banks scored 17 points for Westfield, hitting three 3s along the way, and also handed out four assists. Freshman Braden Smith scored 15 points, including four 3s. Benji Welch collected four rebounds.
Carmel remains undefeated at 9-0 and hosts Cathedral on Wednesday. The Shamrocks travel to Hamilton Southeastern on Friday for a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game with the Royals.
