The Westfield Washington Public Library will host a community meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26 to discuss plans for a new library.
The library board would like to build a new library in downtown Westfield at Westfield Boulevard and Park Street. The current library on Hoover Street was built in 1983 and expanded in both 1994 and 2014. At 32,230 square feet, the current site does not offer enough room for further expansion.
“While the current building has served us well through the years, it doesn’t allow us room to grow and continue to meet the community’s needs,” Library Director Sheryl Sollars said. “Not only will a new building afford us more room, but we’re hoping it will also become a centerpiece in the heart of Westfield’s expanding downtown.”
If approved by the Westfield City Council, the 45,000 square-foot library’s construction and land costs would be covered by a $16.7 million general obligation bond. More details on the bond, what it could mean for taxpayers, and the vision of the new building will all be provided at the meeting.
Those who cannot make it to the meeting in person can attend virtually at this Zoom link.
