“Omni-Man” John Murphy talks long career in business & healthcare

Monday’s episode of The Omnibus Show featured John Murphy, Chairman of the Ascension St. Vincent’s Foundation. He traced his career journey and gave mentoring advice for those going into business and healthcare.

Murphy is the president emeritus of the Ivy Tech Foundation. He was the Managing Director of Wells Fargo Insurance Services USA, Inc., and was responsible for managing all aspects of the company. He served at Anthem, Inc. for 17 years as a Senior Officer and was instrumental in preparing the public offerings of both Acordia, Inc., and Anthem, Inc. He served as President of Anthem Specialty Business, which included Prescription, Behavioral, Life, Dental and Vision benefits, increasing revenue from $300 million to $1.2 billion. He also served as General Manager and Head of Operations at Anthem Midwest.

Previously, Murphy served as President and CEO of Acordia Senior Personal Benefits, President and CEO of Anthem Life of Indiana, and Vice President of Marketing at American National Insurance Company. He began his career as an auditor for the New York Insurance Department and later as Chief Accountant for GEICO.

He has served on numerous for-profit subsidiary boards and non-profit boards, has been asked to serve on corporate pension, information technology, and international marketing committees and task forces, and has served on the boards of private equity and hedge fund capital management companies.

Murphy earned both his B.S. in Accounting and MBA in Finance from St. John’s University in New York. He has attended executive certification programs at Northwestern, Michigan, and Indiana Universities.

Most recently, he was elected as President of the Board of Actors Theatre of Indiana in Carmel.

Murphy has also been the recipient of several sales and civic leadership awards.
