Norbert D. Scher, 89, Indianapolis, passed away on Friday, June 11, 2021 at Ascension St. Vincent’s (Compassus) Hospice in Indianapolis. He was born on June 28, 1931 in Huntington, Ind., to Joseph F. and E. Mildred (Brown) Scher.

Norb graduated from Pennville High School in 1949 where he excelled academically and athletically, having lettered in basketball and baseball all four years of high school. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951 and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict. When he returned from the service, he entered Ball State University where he graduated with a degree in accounting in 1957. He worked as an accountant/benefits manager for George S. Olive & Company for more than 40 years.

In retirement, he enjoyed his favorite hobbies of reading, playing golf, watching sports and chatting with his coffee and breakfast buddies. He was a long-time member of the American Legion and Epworth United Methodist Church where he served on various committees, most recently as coordinator for the church’s donations to community food pantries. But the greatest joys of his life were being with family and watching his children and grandchildren as they participated in their activities.

Norb will be remembered for his soft voice, quick wit, strong faith, and his kind, gentle spirit.

Norb is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Suzanne (Waltz) Scher; daughters, Jody (Jim) Harland (Indianapolis) and Jennifer (Keith) Dwyer (Cincinnati); grandchildren, Nate Harland, Emilie Harland, Cody Dwyer, and Andrew Dwyer; brother, Joseph Scher; and his nieces and nephew, Joi Jimison, Amy Reimschisel, Jill Mohan, Mark Scher and their families.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m., with visitation beginning at 3 p.m., on Thursday, June 17, 2021 at Epworth United Methodist Church, 6450 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis.
