Noblesville resident Norm Hathcoat is one of three men that the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame is recognizing for their contribution as high school basketball officials as the 2018 Men’s Center Circle Officials Award winners.
Steve Fisher and the late Terry Bartell are the other honorees.
Hathcoat is a 1954 graduate of Anderson High School, where he participated in basketball, football and track. His officiating career included 26 sectional assignments, 23 regionals, six semi-states and three state finals, including 1985, 1990 and 1994. In addition to countless holiday tournament games, he worked the Hall of Fame Classic tournament four times. A member of the Central Officials Association, he served two terms as President and two terms as Vice President, as well as three years in rules interpretation and involvement in mentoring young officials. In 1998 he was named as the recipient of the Roy Gardner Award from the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. Retired, he made his living with General Motors in Anderson. In his 62nd year of marriage to the former Marjorie Roach, they are the parents of Carol, Connie and Ronald. A resident of Pendleton for 60 years, he now resides in Noblesville.
Fisher is a 1969 graduate of North Daviess High School, where he was a four-year letter winner in basketball, earning all-conference honors and leading the conference in scoring as a senior. He also earned three varsity letters in baseball before entering Franklin College. His officiating career included 15 boys sectionals, 11 regionals, six semi-states and three state finals assignments in 1987, 1989 and 1992. A member of the Southwestern Officials Association, he served as secretary from 1981-1991, with 10 years of rules interpretation, two years as a clinician and was involved in mentoring a new generation of officials, who are now working state tournament games. He was the recipient of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Assocation’s Roy Gardner Award in 1999. Making a career in education, he has been a member of the Indiana Association of School Principals, Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents and Indiana Association of School Businesss Officials. He is currently employed as a Lecturer of Education at Franklin College and resides in New Albany. Married to the former Mariane Mabrey, he has three children – Carlye, Ashlye and Lacy.
Bartell was a 1973 graduate of South Bend Jackson High School. An accomplished athlete who lettered in basketball, baseball and football, he earned all-conference honors in baseball and football before playing baseball at Western Michigan University and serving as a senior co-captain. His officiating career included 21 boys basketball sectionals, 16 regionals, seven semi-states and three state finals games in 2002, 2003 and 2008. A member of the Western Indiana Officials Association, he served as Vice President and Sport Chairman for basketball, additionally working as a clinician for IHSAA rules clinics and WIOA clinics. Employed as a teacher at North Montgomery High School, Bartell was the head baseball coach there from 1980 – 1992 and coached the varsity girls basketball team from 1997 – 2007, leading them to five sectional championships. Married to the former Dee Peterman, he was the father of Casey, Jessica and Kylie. He passed away in July 2009.
All Center Circle Officials Award winners will be honored at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame’s 57th Annual Men’s Awards Banquet on Wednesday, March 21, 2018.
A midday reception, free and open to the public, will be held at the Hall of Fame museum in New Castle. The evening banquet will take place at the Primo Banquet Hall, which is located on the south side of Indianapolis.
