Noblesville humor columnist receives Indiana Arts Commission grant

Curtis Honeycutt, writer of the weekly humor column “Grammar Guy,” will receive a $2,000 grant through the Indiana Arts Commission’s Individual Advancement Program. The grant, funded by the State of Indiana in conjunction with the federally appropriated funds from the National Endowment for the Arts, will allow Honeycutt to pursue some writing projects as well as a literary-focused event in 2020.

Grammar Guy appears in over 30 newspapers across the country. Through his column, Honeycutt has received a national award from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists and was named Humor Writer of the Month in August 2018 by the Erma Bombeck Writers Workshop.

With the grant, Honeycutt will attend a writing conference and complete the first draft of a nonfiction humor book about grammar. He will throw a grammar party and interactive seminar at a venue in Noblesville or Fishers. In addition to storytelling about grammar as well as a TED-style talk about grammar, Honeycutt will invite area newspaper editors to participate in a panel discussing the state of newspapers in a quickly changing digital landscape.

“My long-term goal is to make a full-time living from my writing work,” said Honeycutt, who recently joined the board of directors of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists. “Not only do I love words and writing, but I believe in the value and importance of local newspapers to help keep the public informed. I’m grateful for this opportunity and for the Indiana State Legislature and Governor Holcomb for continuing to fund this grant program.”
