Noblesville hosts event on “Going Beyond Diversity”

The Noblesville Diversity Coalition (NDC) invites the public to its latest community forum in the series that began in March. “Going Beyond Diversity” will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29 in the Noblesville High School auditorium, 1811 Cumberland Road.

Cornelius Minor, a Brooklyn-based educator, will lead the discussion on equity, inclusion and why diversity alone is not enough for growing, vibrant communities such as Noblesville. Minor uses technology, music and social media to engage audiences on the topic of diversity. The event offers a family friendly, judgement-free atmosphere where all ages are welcome to attend and participate.

It comes just two weeks since racist graffiti threatening students of color was discovered in a bathroom at Noblesville High School. This sparked an immediate response from Noblesville Schools, Noblesville Police Department, NDC and other community leaders, followed by a public discussion at Ivy Tech for residents to stand united against acts of hate.

“We are still recovering from what happened, but it’s important that we continue this conversation – as a community and at home with our families,” said Deputy Mayor Steve Cooke, a member of the coalition. “Thursday night’s event offers us the chance to hear from a nationally renowned speaker, whose unique and exciting approach can help us find new ways to celebrate our diversity.”

The coalition was formed in early 2018 by concerned citizens and representatives from education, government, business and faith-based organizations. NDC advocates for diversity, equity and inclusion in the Noblesville community. Its advocates are committed to creating and maintaining a culture that respects and values all individuals and families by promoting community efforts that celebrate our differences.
