Noblesville High School teacher recognized by Rose-Hulman for helping students succeed

Noblesville High School physics teacher Ken Dollaske has received the Samuel F. Hulbert Outstanding Teacher Award from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind.

The award was presented during the college’s recent Honors and Awards Ceremony. Making the recognition more special for Dollaske is that it came from a nomination submitted by one of his former students, Vincent Hammer, a Rose-Hulman optical engineering major.

Dollaske was recognized for having a profound influence on his students, particularly Hammer, who vividly recalls how Dollaske’s teaching altered his academic trajectory.

“His classes were engaging and practical, focused on enlightening the way the world works and applying concepts to real, observable phenomena in a way that far exceeds the standard for high school physics courses,” Hammer said.

This dedication has yielded impressive results, including exceptional pass rates on Advanced Placement exams and numerous students advancing to prestigious STEM programs, like Rose-Hulman. Dollaske also demonstrates a commitment to his students’ overall success and well-being. Hammer praises his teacher’s holistic approach.

“He exemplifies a well-rounded life that is inspiring for students and shows the value of a strong brain and a healthy body,” Hammer said.

Dollaske’s influence and teachings still resonate with Hammer, helping him succeed in advanced college courses at the nation’s top-ranked college for undergraduate science, engineering, and mathematics education.

“In EMag last quarter, I got a perfect score on the introductory concept check, which far exceeded my expectations, despite the fact that I had not covered that material in any capacity in three years,” Hammer said. “I cannot think of a teacher I have encountered who has had a larger influence on the path I have taken and the life I live. Somehow shockingly, I don’t believe my experience is unique.”

The award is named for Hulbert, who served as Rose-Hulman’s president for 28 years and was a dedicated teacher in the fields of ceramics science and biomaterials.
