SMC Corporation of America (SMC) has identified and responded to a cybersecurity incident that may have exposed the personal information of its employees, including those who live in the state of California.

On Dec. 3, 2024, SMC discovered unauthorized access to its technology infrastructure by a foreign cyber threat actor. The incident appears to have been an attempt to disrupt SMC’s IT systems and deploy ransomware.

Upon detection, SMC immediately engaged cybersecurity experts and legal counsel to assess and contain the breach. The company has since been working closely with federal authorities and cybersecurity professionals to assess employee exposure, reinforce security measures, and focus on preventing future incidents.

Examples of the type of personal information that may have been exposed includes names, addresses, Social Security numbers, date of birth, driver’s licenses, and limited medical benefits-related information.

While the full extent of the breach is still under review, SMC is committed to supporting those individuals in accordance with both its internal regulations as well as international, federal, state, and local data breach laws.

According to SMC President and CEO Kelley Stacey, “We take this matter seriously and are implementing enhanced security protocols to further protect our systems and our team members. Their peace of mind during this time is important to us as is the confidence they have in SMC to do all we can to support them.”

One way the company is helping employees is by providing 24 months of complimentary credit and dark web monitoring services through Experian. In addition, the company’s internal teams are working with third-party experts to follow best practices as well as federal and state regulations intended to protect those individuals who are exposed in these types of incidents.

Those employees who were affected should have received written notifications as they were sent beginning Feb. 3, 2025. This communication details the steps they can take to safeguard their information, including instructions for credit monitoring and placing security freezes. SMC has also established a dedicated call center to address concerns and provide additional support.

For further information, individuals may contact SMC’s dedicated toll-free help line at 1-833-918-9829.
