Fishers won at Greenfield-Central Tuesday night by a score of 13-8.
The Class 4A No. 3 Tigers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead when JJ Woolwine led off the game with a bunt single, and Craig Yoho followed with a two-run home run to left center field. Yoho’s home run was his third of the year and the ninth of his career setting the school’s career home run record. The Tigers added another run in the first inning when Alex Jamieson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Greenfield Cougars scored two in the bottom of the first and only put one ball in play thanks to four walks, two wild pitches, and two passed balls. Neither team scored in the second inning. Alex Jamieson delivered an RBI double in the third inning to extend the Tigers lead to 4-2. The Cougars quickly answered in the bottom of the third to take a 5-4 lead on a single, walk, double, single, and sacrifice fly.
The Tigers responded again with three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 7-5 lead, a lead that they would never relinquish. With one out, Yoho delivered a double over the centerfielder’s head, advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch, and scored on another wild pitch. After Grant Richardson walked, Kiel Brenczewski delivered a double beyond the reach of the left fielder. Matthew Wolff then connected on an RBI single scoring Richardson, but Brenczewski was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second. Daniel Owens then followed with a bizarre two-out RBI triple to right field that scored Wolff. The Cougar’s right fielder dove for the ball, which the umpire ruled that the ball was trapped and not caught. As an argument pursued between the player and the umpire, Owens continued to run around the bases for a triple.
Jamieson led off the fifth inning with his second double of the night. Courtesy Runner Grant Whetsel advanced to third on a wild pitch and later scored on a passed ball to extend the Tigers lead to 8-5. An RBI double from Ben Burton, an RBI groundout from Nick Lukac, and a balk that plated Burton extended the Tigers lead to 11-5 in the sixth inning. The Tigers would add two more runs in the seventh when Jamieson delivered his third hit of the night, a two-run single.
With the score 13-5 in the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers appeared to have the game sealed up, but their defense committed three errors leading to three unearned runs for the Cougars and a final score of 13-8.
After starter Mason Thomas allowed five runs (four of them earned) in two-plus innings of work, the Tigers bullpen held the Cougars scoreless until the wild seventh inning. Tristan Baker (1-0) earned the win on the mound with two scoreless innings of relief allowing one hit, while striking out two. Drew Hoffman struck out one in a perfect 1-2-3 inning. Alex Klotz allowed one hit and a walk before a 5-4-3 double play from Brenczewski, Lukac, and Owens ended the sixth inning. Owens struck out the side in the seventh inning after the Tigers’ three miscues on defensive allowed three unearned runs.
Jamieson led the Tigers with four RBIs on a 3-for-4 night. Yoho and Wolff both had multi-hit nights.
The Tigers return to HCC play on Thursday with a three-game series against their crosstown rival Southeastern Royals. The Tigers will host the Royals at 6 p.m. on Thursday and at noon on Saturday and will travel to Southeastern on Friday night for a 6 p.m. game.
