One year and more than 14,000 passengers later, the Nickel Plate Express railroad is celebrating a full year of operations with a birthday excursion Saturday, Sept. 14.

The historic 1950s Santa Fe train equipment arrived in Hamilton County in August 2018 and has been hosting passengers for experiences ranging from dining to dashing superheroes.

“Ridership has exceeded expectations,” said Toni Dickover, Nickel Plate Heritage Railroad board president. “We’ve experienced a tremendous year of growth, learned a lot and are excited about what the next year brings.”

Boarding primarily out of Atlanta, the Nickel Plate Express works closely with northern Hamilton County businesses to stimulate growth in the communities of Cicero, Arcadia and Atlanta. More recently, the Nickel Plate Express has offered select rides out of Forest Park in Noblesville.

Over the past year, Nickel Plate Express has maintained positive customer reviews while offering family-friendly and adult dining experiences. Events such as the holiday Reindeer Ride Express and the Uncorked Express have been flagship events for the nonprofit.

The start-up has enjoyed publicity from regional and national publications such as the Chicago Tribune, Reader’s Digest and Midwest Living.

“The Nickel Plate Express is thrilled by the public’s response to our events this past year,” said Dagny Zupin, Nickel Plate Express director. “As we enter our second year of operations, we look forward to expanding our programming and growing our presence in the communities of Noblesville, Cicero and Arcadia.”

The Nickel Plate Express will celebrate one-year of operations with Birthday Express rides at noon on 2 p.m. on Sept. 14. Passengers will get a birthday treat and can sign the train’s birthday card. Purchase tickets to celebrate the milestone at NickelPlateExpress.com/tickets.
