Fredrick Green paints what he knows. People, places, moments in time. Most recently, he has been exploring the theme of “Being There.”
Green
Green graduated from Indiana University with a BFA in printmaking. In his words, he “got a degree from IU and it took 35 years to get a paycheck from it.” Shortly after, he took up a job in construction design. He developed his business and creative skills for five years before becoming an architect. It turned into a life-long career and his fine arts journey went into hiatus.
In 2016, he and his wife built an art studio onto their current home; he began experimenting with painting, and she experimented with textiles.
Each painting is made with a loose hand. Thin layers build depth and create vivid tones. Smaller details are done in brushwork and larger details with tools like stamps and silicone spatulas. Green says he finds the process similar to lithography. Always the storyteller, he captures images of his travels, heartfelt moments with family, or forgotten fragments of Americana. Lately, he has been finding inspiration close to home. Even the fields he drives past lend themselves to his imagination. “Nothing is the color you think it is,” he said.
Fredrick Green’s exhibit, “Being There,” is on exhibit in the Stephenson House on the Nickel Plate Arts campus from Friday, Aug. 5 through Saturday, Aug. 27. The gallery is free and open to the public from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
