Dear Editor:

Carmel, Noblesville, and Westfield could get their own ZIP codes if federal legislation becomes law.

The House of Representatives has passed a bill now before the Senate would direct the U.S. Postal Service to designate unique ZIP codes for 74 communities across the country.

Communities in more than 20 states will get their own ZIP codes if the bill becomes law.

And then the trouble starts.

A friend provided this list of changes we face:

  • Driver’s license
  • Vehicle registration
  • IRS records
  • Social Security records
  • Voter registration
  • Utilities
  • Car insurance
  • Home Insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Retirement account
  • Investment accounts
  • Disabled parking permit records

You probably can think of more.

And you can bet your bottom dollar all those junk mailers will have the changes made instantly.

Confiscating our money is one thing, turning us into all-day secretaries is quite another.

  1. All those things that people had to change when the old mayor changed the street names in downtown Carmel.
