Recognizes moms, daughters for community service at annual awards ceremony

The Crossroads Chapter of National Charity League (NCL) held its annual awards ceremony to recognize its 2021 scholarship winner along with mothers and daughters (grades 7-12) for their community service efforts, which culminated in the chapter donating 3,030 volunteer hours over the past year.

NCL Crossroads Scholarship Winner

The chapter awarded Summer Stogsdill, a Lebanon High School senior, as the 2021 scholarship recipient. Stogsdill was awarded the $500 NCL Crossroads scholarship for her consistent involvement in community service, leadership, and cultural activities. She will attend either Murray State University or Marian University to pursue nursing or pre-physician assistant studies.

“Summer is a leader in her service organizations, academics, and athletic teams. She is an active participant and volunteer at her church and in Girl Scouts,” said Amy Mick, NCL Crossroads Scholarship Committee Member. “We were confident that she was the right choice to receive this year’s scholarship.”

Community service is at the heart of the NCL scholarship and in the heart of Stogsdill. One of the most meaningful ways that she has made an impact was by making dresses for girls in Africa. After visiting South Africa and noticing the young girls in tattered clothing, Summer stated, “I knew I wanted to make a difference and help in any way I could.” Summer used donated pillowcases and learned how to sew in order to make over 30 dresses that she sent to Africa through the Little Dresses for Africa organization.

Summer also has proven leadership skills. Some of her roles include serving as captain of the girls swim team, girls track team, and girls soccer team.

The last focus of the scholarship criteria is cultural involvement. Summer enjoys traveling and learning new languages. Her cultural experiences also inspired her to make a difference after returning from her trip to Africa.
