National championships: Four Carmel swimmers compete in the 400 freestyle

Four was the magic number for Carmel Friday at the IU Natatorium.

It was the fourth day of the 2023 Phillips 66 National Championships. One of the events was the men’s 400 freestyle. And four Carmel swimmers competed in that event, the most swimmers (past and present combined) it has had in any one event so far in the championships.

Two swimmers reached the “A” final. Jake Mitchell, a 2020 Carmel graduate and Olympic swimmer, placed third in that race with a time 3 minutes, 46.87 seconds. Mitchell swam for the University of Michigan in his first two years of college, then transferred to the University of Florida for his junior year. He will be a senior for the Gators this fall. Meanwhile, Aaron Shackell, committed to the University of California, placed sixth in the final, clocking in at 3:49.43.

Drew Kibler, also an Olympian and five-time national champion from the University of Texas, placed second in the “B” final with a time of 3:49.88. Kibler is a 2018 graduate of Carmel. Gregg Enoch, a senior-to-be at Carmel, placed fifth in the “D” final, finshing in 3:56.68. He has committed to the University of Louisville.

In other events:

– Carmel’s Wyatt Davis, a senior-to-be at the University of Michigan, took sixth place in the “A” final of the men’s 100 backstroke. He clocked in at 53.43 seconds.

– Carmel’s Molly Sweeney, an incoming sophomore for the Greyhounds, won the “C” final in the women’s 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.76.

– Carmel’s Lynsey Bowen, a junior-to-be for the ‘Hounds, placed seventh in the “C” final of the women’s 400 freestyle. Her time was 4:15.22.

– Fishers’ Jo Jo Ramey, who will begin her freshman year at Florida this fall, was fifth in the “D” final of the women’s 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.54.

The National Championships finish today with the women’s 1500 freestyle, the men’s 800 freestyle, and both the women’s and men’s 200 medley and 50 free events.
