December 3, 1921 – June 25, 2021
Myron L. Rockhill, 99, Carmel, passed away on Friday, June 25, 2021. He was born on December 3, 1921 in Winchester, Ind., son of Marvin and Vada (Thornburg) Rockhill.
Following his graduation from Lynn High School, Myron attended Fort Wayne International Business College.
Myron and Phyllis Horton were married on August 4, 1946. Their love story began in August of 1942 when they met on a public bus between Butler University and Carmel. Myron was headed to his first day at Bunker Hill after enlisting in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and Phyllis was on the bus on her way home from college. While enlisted, Myron served as an Aviation Machinist in the South Pacific.
Myron and Phyllis were privileged to travel the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. Through the years they enjoyed camping, attending sporting events and playing cards with friends and family.
Myron worked 36 years as an Auditor and Accountant for Indiana Farm Bureau Co-op. After retiring in January of 1984, Myron and Phyllis looked forward to getting away from Indiana winters by spending six months in Florida and six months in their Carmel home.
Through the years, Myron made many life-long friends. He was recognized as a kind, loving, and thoughtful Christian man, who made friends easily and wanted to please others. Myron was a survivor and possessed stamina as he recovered from open heart surgery and breast cancer. Even during his later years with dementia, he kept his sweet spirit.
He was a member of the Randolph County Historical Society, Carmel Clay Historical Society, and the Carmel Masonic Lodge. Before dementia set in, Myron had an incredible memory and wrote his memoirs, which were made into a memory book.
In addition to his parents, Myron was preceded in death by brothers, Elden Rockhill and John Robert Rockhill; and sisters, Doris Locke and Virginia Coffin.
Survivors include his loving wife of almost 75 years, Phyllis Rockhill; children, Jerry (Denise) Rockhill, James (Sharon) Rockhill, and Jean (Tom) Pluchar; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
There will be a gathering of family and friends at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at Carmel Friends Church, of which Myron was a member, and where his Celebration of Life Service will begin at 1 p.m. The Carmel Friends Church is located at 651 W. Main St., Carmel.
