Millers, ‘Rocks split doubleheader, Westfield’s Meyer throws no-hitter

It turned out to be a big night at The Dunk for both the Noblesville and Westfield baseball teams.
The Millers and Shamrocks played a doubleheader to complete their Hoosier Crossroads Conference series Friday night at Don Dunker Field. Noblesville won the first game 14-7 to clinch the series since the Millers won on Thursday. Westfield won the second game 3-0, with Matthew Meyer throwing a no-hitter.
Meyer needed 103 pitches for his achievement. He struck out 10 while allowing just four walks.
“In game two, Matthew Meyer was fantastic,” said Shamrocks coach Ryan Bunnell. “He was dominant at times and at other times in the game he just kept the Millers off balance. He made a nice adjustment after walking the first two batters of the game which was good to see he deserves a lot of credit for.”
Meanwhile, Westfield (the designated home team) scored one run each in the first, fourth and fifth innings. The Shamrocks’ first run was a sacrifice fly from Sam Eaton that scored Bryce Dorton. Payton Tamm singled in Kyle Pepiot for the second run and Meyer’s fifth-inning single sent Eli Patchett home.
Meyer was just as solid at the plate, going 2-for-3. He and Logan McClurg both hit one double.
Reese Sharp pitched five innings for Noblesville, striking out eight.
Noblesville got off to a 4-0 start in the bottom of the first inning of Game 1. DJ Owens hit a single to score Tyler Owens for the first run. Sharp then hit a home run into left field; the three-run shot also scored Mark Goudy and DJ Owens.
Westfield got on the board in the second inning. Dorton got on base with a triple, then scored on an RBI groundout from Trey Anderson.
But the Millers poured in seven runs in the bottom of the second. Tyler Owens tripled home Jackson Ramey, then was sent on a DJ Owens single. Jacob Thieman singled in Goudy, then Sharp knocked a triple into center field to score DJ Owens and Thieman.
Copper Miles came up next, and his single scored Sharp. Zac Tuiniei drew a walk to load the bases, and Miles would steal home on the next play.
The Shamrocks answered in the top of the third with six runs. McClurg began the inning with a right field home run. Meyer hit a triple, then was sent home on a Eaton sacrifice fly.
Dorton doubled in Luke Hutson, then an Anderson double got Pepiot and Dorton home. Tamm then hit a sacrifice fly to get Anderson in to score.
All that cut Noblesville’s lead to 11-7. The Millers added two more runs in the fourth inning; Ramey’s double scored Bryce Randolph, then Ramey was sent home on a sacrifice fly by DJ Owens. Noblesville’s final run of the game came in the fifth inning, when Miles scored on a wild pitch.
Sharp finished the game with five RBIs. DJ Owens hit 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Ryan Plummer threw four and two-thirds innings for the win, striking out five. Meanwhile, Westfield’s Anderson drove in three runs.
Noblesville is 6-5 and starts an HCC series with Zionsville Tuesday at The Dunk. Westfield is 3-4 and hosts Carmel on Monday.
