Noblesville’s Caroline Whallon dominated at Junior Championship

Noblesville’s Caroline Whallon ran away with a prestigious tournament this week at the Country Club of Terre Haute.
Whallon, an incoming senior for the Millers, triumphed at the Indiana Golf Association’s Girls State Junior Championship, a three-day, 54-hole event on the Howard Bailey Junior Golf Tour. She finished with a total score of 223, seven-over par and four strokes ahead of second place.
Whallon played consistent throughout the tournament, starting with a first-day finish of 74, draining three birdies along the way. She collected two more birdies in her second round, in which she totaled a 75.
But things took off for Whallon in her third round. She birdied the first hole, then had a stretch of three consecutive birdies on holes 11, 12 and 13. Whallon eventually finished with a 74, easily clinching the tournament.
Three other players with Hamilton County ties placed in the top 10. Claire Swathwood, an incoming Carmel junior carded a 232, while Becky Williams, a recent graduate of University High School also scored 232, tying them both for seventh place. Swathwood made seven birdies during the event and Williams made six.
Michaela Headlee, another incoming Carmel junior, placed ninth with a score of 233. Headlee made five birdies over the tournament.

The Indiana Golf Foundation’s Howard Bailey Junior Golf Program has been in full swing since early June with tournaments taking place across the state. The Reporter will be publishing results from the tour, as well as the other big tournaments throughout Indiana, during the summer.
Before we get to that, there were a couple of events that took place earlier in the spring. On April 9 and 10, a spring series tournament took place for girls at Covered Bridge Golf Club in Sellersburg. Headlee won the event in a three-woman playoff that also included incoming Westfield senior Samantha Brown.

Another girls spring series tournament took place May 15 at Kokomo Country Club. Brown was the highest Hamilton County finisher in that event, tying for second.
