Mildred Irene Babbitt

April 29, 1927 – February 24, 2020

Mildred Irene Babbitt, 92, Noblesville, passed away Monday morning, February 24, 2020 at Riverview Health in Noblesville. Born April 29, 1927 in Sheridan, she was the daughter of the late Gurnie Basil and Edith M. (Clampitt) Stowers.

Mildred graduated from Sheridan High School with the Class of 1945. After graduation she enrolled at Indiana Central Business College, earning her degree and heading off into the workforce. Shortly after completing her degree Mildred took a bookkeeping position with the Indiana State Board of Health. She would stay with the Board of Health for a few years before moving on to other job opportunities. Throughout her career, Mildred worked as a bookkeeper for numerous companies, both big and small, around the state. Her last position was in the accounts payable department at ITT Tech.

When she found a free moment, you could sometimes find her working on a cross stitch or needlework projects, but more often than not you could find her at the bowling alley. Mildred loved to go bowling and was active in her league play until she turned 90 – at that time she decided she might slow down just a little. This “slowing down” period gave her much more time to devote to watching the Colts and the Pacers, as well as her favorite channel, QVC. Mildred also raised and bred parrotlets for many years.

She was a 50 years member and past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star. Mildred also attended the First United Methodist Church of Noblesville.

Mildred is survived by her three sons, Dennis L. Babbitt, Muncie, Gary Allen Babbitt, Trinity, Fla., and Randall Lynn Babbitt, Lebanon; three nieces, Debbie L. Price (Randy), Marcia McKenzie and Charlene Ferger; and two nephews, David L. Stowers (Julie) and Devon L. “Sparky” Stowers (Julie).

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Warren E. Stowers; sister Bonetha J. “Bonnie” Ferger; daughter-in-law, Joanne Babbitt; and by her husband, Russell B. Babbitt, on August 30, 2004. She and Russell were married on April 7, 1947.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 2, 2020 at Kercheval Funeral Home, 306 E. 10th St., Sheridan, with visitation from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow at Crown View Cemetery in Sheridan. Pastor Mary Eileen Spence will be officiating.

Memorial contributions may be presented to the charity of the donor’s choice.
