Hamilton Heights senior Max Bowman has signed a letter of intent to run cross country and track for Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC), just outside of Terre Haute, Ind., this fall. SMWC is a member of the United States College Athletic Association (USCAA) and an NAIA athletic institution. He is the son of Kelley Cain.
Bowman chose to go to SMWC because of its teaching program, campus, and how uplifting and welcoming the team was during his visit. He plans to study mathematics and education and ultimately become a high school math teacher.
A multi-sport athlete (swimming and Unified Bocce Ball), Bowman was a recipient of the Husky Award for Cross Country. Bowman, who has been running since the sixth grade, also attended an All Star Cross Country camp and ran with multiple coaches to better his skills and endurance. He is a member of the Hamilton Heights Chapter of Business Professionals of America (BPA) and the youth group at Cicero Christian Church.
Bowman credits his papa, Tom Jarvis, who has been a major influence in his development over the years.
“He has taught me many things that have helped me with decision making and taking care of myself,” Bowman said. “I would also like to thank my mom for everything she has done for me. I would like to thank my coaches for giving me this opportunity. I can’t wait to see where this step in my life will take me.”
“Max has been a dedicated track team member for four years and he is always willing to help the team out when needed,” Boys & Girls Track Team Coach Todd Jones said. “Max even did 300 hurdles one year because we needed someone to fill that spot at a track meet.”
“We are very happy for Max to receive this opportunity to continue his cross country and track & field career at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods,” Hamilton Heights Athletic Director Kurt Ogden said. “He is such a gentleman and a tremendous role model for other athletes here at Hamilton Heights. He will be a great addition to their teams, both academically and athletically.”
“Max was a varsity runner throughout his four years on the HH Cross Country team,” Boys Cross Country Coach Bill Trachtman said. “This past season he was our Mental Attitude award winner. Max always had a positive disposition no matter how he finished a race. Max has a special way of connecting to his peers on the team and making everyone feel like they are a vital part of our program.”
