Martha Jane Hobson

January 29, 1931 – September 26, 2021

Martha Jane Hobson, 90, passed away peacefully at her home in rural Zionsville, surrounded by her loving family, on Sunday morning, September 26, 2021. Born in Kempton, Ind., on January 29, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Ola Ernest and Theresa Elizabeth (Moore) Baird.

Martha graduated from Sheridan High School with the Class of 1949. Shortly after graduation, she entered the workforce. She worked for various companies including RCA and Ayr-Way, as well as helping in the cafeteria at Union Elementary School. She later hired on with Aero Drapery as a seamstress and remained with the company for 25 years. Martha also served as a switchboard operator for the Big Springs community for quite a few years.

She was a member of the Community Mother’s Club.

When she had time to relax, she loved losing herself in the pages of a good book. She also enjoyed knitting, sewing, and crocheting, as well as making paper embroidery. Martha enjoyed bowling, especially when it came to league play during her years at Aero.

One of Martha’s favorite activities was traveling. One can only assume that she caught the travel bug in the fall of 1950, when she, along with her soon-to-be husband, headed out on an impromptu road trip to Arkansas with her sister, and sister’s soon-to-be husband. They had decided to elope and marry their significant others together. Their unusual story – two sisters getting married at the same time – was made more remarkable since the new husbands were also brothers. On October 9, 1950, sisters Martha and Norma married brothers Harley and Harold, and a thus began a lifetime of double dates with each other’s favorite couple. They loved traveling together, and never tired of telling their story.

Family was a very important part of Martha’s life, and she loved being a part of whatever activities her grandkids were involved in.

Martha is survived by the love of her life, Harley W. Hobson; son, Keith L. Hobson (Lisa) of Zionsville; daughter, Kathy J. Brewer of Sheridan; nine grandchildren, Gavin Hobson, Graham Hobson, Jake Hobson, Cora Hobson, John Smith (Kristy), Andy Smith, Jessica Bogus (Mike), Sarah Gregg (Ryan) and Erika Rinehart (Morgan); 17 great-grandchildren, Chaney Smith, Mac Smith, Remington “Remi” Smith, Reece Smith, Lucy Smith, John Smith, Eli Smith, Trai Fitzgerald, Nakia Bogus, Treyton Bogus, Addalyn Bogus, Owen Gregg, Liam Gregg, Benton Rinehart, Ava Rinehart, and twins, Knox and River Hobson; brothers, Floyd “Don” Baird of Hawkinsville, Ga., and Ralph “Jack” Baird of Sheridan; sister, Norma Hobson of Sheridan; many nieces and nephews; and by her guardian angel and canine BFF, Zoey.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Kenneth K. Hobson; and sisters, Doris Stultz, Georgia Moore, and Betty Baker.

Services will be held on Friday evening, October 1, 2021, at Kercheval Funeral Home, 306 E. 10th St., Sheridan, with visitation from 4 p.m. until the time of service. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, October 2, 2021, at Crown View Cemetery in Sheridan.
