Mark F. Uchida III, 78, Carmel, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2021 at Carmel St. Vincent hospital. He was born on November 22, 1942, in Chicago, Ill., to Mark F. and Helen J. (Raine) Uchida.
Mark attended Lane Tech High School in Chicago and received his undergraduate, Master’s and PhD from the University of Illinois in Urbana, Ill.
For more than 30 years, Mark was a professor of finance at what was then the College of Business Administration at Butler University, before retiring in 2011. Some of his roles included teaching finance, advising students interested in starting their own business, and directing the MBA program. In one of his most prominent roles, Dr. Uchida founded the Real Business Experience (RBE) course. He designed, taught, and trained other faculty to teach this dynamic class.
Mark was a master storyteller who regaled his audiences with long, rambling, delightful stories around the dinner table. Throughout his life, Mark enjoyed fishing and spending time on the water, particularly at Rismons Lodge in Wisconsin, where he used to fish with his father.
All three of Mark and Rita’s children attended Butler University. As a professor, Mark took great pleasure in adding exaggerated stories about his children’s lives to his lectures, much to their surprise. This was just a sliver of his happy and playful personality that lasted his entire life.
Mark was known by many for his generosity of spirit, love of his work, and engaging presence wherever he was. He was dedicated to his students and genuinely cared about their development and success. He will be sorely missed by his extended family and all those whose lives he touched along his wonderful journey through this world.
In addition to his parents, Mark was preceded in death by his son, Mark F. Uchida IV.
Mark is survived by his loving wife, Rita Uchida; daughter, Mary Uchida (John Leahey); son, Paul (Trish) Uchida; grandchildren, Jon Uchida and Kate Uchida; sister, Nancy (Bob) Bellus; brother, Ken (Bonnie) Uchida; daughter-in-law, Ann Uchida; cousins, Sandy Herrick, Kate (Joe) Kuhel, Yukie (Toshehei) Masuda, and Marit Clausen; nieces, Lisa Uchida, Lana Uchida, Lorel (David) Dyer, and April Bellus; nephews, Paul Bellus and Chris Bellus (Stephanie Bonjack); and grandnephew, Calder Bellus.
At Mark’s request, no services are being held.
