A low-income rental community named Cumberland Cottages is being proposed for an area at Cumberland Road and 141st Street. The development from HAND, a Hamilton County nonprofit organization specializing in constructing such projects, describes the project as a rental community consisting of individual buildings resembling cottages.
Although anyone qualifying would be able to apply as residents, it is targeted at single parents working in jobs such as the restaurant industry.
The council gave the plans first reading. It will now head to the Fishers Plan Commission for a public hearing and advisory vote before returning to the city council.

We don’t need or want a rental property here. This just breeds problems. When people don’t own their homes they usually don’t take care of it! Who will maintain the property? How many police calls do you think this will bring? This is a BAD idea!! It looks nice but it won’t stay that way for long.
People can’t afford to buy homes anymore. The minimum wage has been stagnant since 2009 at $7.25. Even at $15 an hour, people can’t afford to buy homes. Folks with “good jobs” are burdened with student debt, which makes them unable to afford a down payment in order to purchase a home. So what do you propose? Stop being elitist.
We have been working in management level jobs for years and had 2 homes on reverse mortgages. Our reason is why not keep your money as long as you can. When we floated the idea of reverse mortgages to our HOA (not far from 141st & Cumberland), we were told that most of the homeowners had paid cash for those homes and they didn’t want to encourage “riff raff” to come into the neighborhood. We left and went into an independent senior apartment and didn’t look back. My son is renting, and would make anyone happy to have him as a neighbor. Get your heads out of your uppityness, people. People are so mean spirited.
