Lois Carol (Jaeger) Northrop

March 23, 1927 – December 8, 2020

Lois Carol Northrop, 93, passed away of natural causes on Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at Hamilton Trace Assisted Living in Fishers. She was born on March 23, 1927 to Louis and Irma (Tannert) Jaeger in Orange, N.J.

She is survived by her daughter, Amy (Clark) Russell; sons, Tom (Wilaiwan) Northrop and Jeff Northrop (Sandra Taylor); grandson, Jeffrey Thomas “JT” Turner; and her two beloved cats.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Betty Lou Northrop.

Lois earned a zoology degree from Cornell University (1949), two masters degrees: Physiology (Iowa State University 1950) and Psychology (University of Maryland 1972), and a PhD in Quantitative Psychology from the University of Maryland (1975). She worked many years for the Federal Office of Personnel Management in Washington, D.C., as a Research Psychologist. She was involved in the development of many aptitude tests for potential federal employees, including the airport air traffic controllers’ exam.

Lois will be remembered by many as a kind, fair, non-judgmental, smart, and especially during this past year – very courageous person. She was not a big talker but when she spoke, she always had something thoughtful to contribute. She read voraciously and her mind stayed sharp. Lois was also very creative throughout her life. She loved to cook, sew and knit when she was younger. Later in life she started quilting and designed many beautiful wall hangings. Lastly, Lois was an animal lover, especially of cats. She had cats throughout her life, being her “children” after her children were grown. Lois passed away with her cats, P.B. and Persephone, at her side.

Lois had been a member of St. Alban’s Episcopal church since moving to Indianapolis in 1992. Her Christian faith was important to her throughout her life.

Lois’ family will be forever grateful to the Assisted Living staff at Hamilton Trace for taking such good care of her – not just through health care but also by truly being her friend.

Services will be held at a later time. Lois’s family has entrusted Randall & Roberts Fishers Mortuary with the care of Lois.

Memorial contributions may be made to Humane Society of Indianapolis, 7929 N. Michigan Road, Indianapolis, IN 46268, or at indyhumane.org.
