Local ladies visit the Madonna of the Trail

In commemoration of pioneer mothers of the covered wagon days, this Madonna of the Trail statue in Richmond, Ind., is the ninth link in the Great National Shrine erected by the Daughters of the American Revolution along the National Road Trail.

The Madonna of the Trail is one of 12 statues situated along the National Road Trail, running along U.S. Highway 40 from Maryland to California. (Photo provided)

There are only 12 statues linked along U.S. 40 from Cumberland, Md., to Upland, Calif. The Richmond statue stands at the entrance of Glen Miller Park, at U.S. 40 East and North 22nd Street.

Chapter officers, along with two members of the Horseshoe Prairie Chapter of National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, traveled to Richmond to view the refurbished statue, which recently completed an extensive restoration.
