Madison Butler, Fishers High School student, is the winner of the Daughters of the American Revolution Horseshoe Prairie Chapter’s Good Citizen Award, and was recently named winner of the State DAR competition on May 19 at the INDAR conference in Indianapolis.
The title of the essay that students were asked to address was “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It” and the focus question was “What new challenges will America face as we move forward into the future?”
“I am deeply grateful to have received the DAR Good Citizen Award for Indiana,” said Butler. “The banquet was a wonderful opportunity to meet incredible young people from across Indiana, and I am very humbled to be considered among them. Thank you to the DAR for this investment in my future.”
The DAR Good Citizens program and scholarship contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. The program is open to all senior class students enrolled in accredited public or private secondary schools that are in good standing with their state’s board of education. United States citizenship is not required.
The student selected as the school’s DAR Good Citizen must have the qualities of dependability (which includes truthfulness, loyalty and punctuality); service (which includes cooperation, courtesy and consideration of others); leadership (which includes personality, self-control and ability to assume responsibility); and patriotism (which includes unselfish interest in family, school, community and nation) to an outstanding degree.
There were 13 finalists, with 368 students participating in the scholarship contest and 64 chapters sent their winner packet for state judging. The state judges, as the county judges, were not affiliated with DAR. The contest was based on student dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. Personal information accounted for 70 possible points and the written essay counted for 30 possible points.
Horseshoe Prairie Chapter was honored to sponsor Butler in the annual Good Citizen program and will once again make the opportunity available for senior students in the 2019-2020 academic year.
