The Westfield Lions Club Poker for Sight Texas Hold’em Tournaments started a new tradition several years ago. At the start of each round of play the Lions give a donation check to a local charity.
At this fall’s tourney the club elected to support Westfield Youth Assistance, Indiana Military Veterans Hall of Fame, Third Phase Homeless Shelter, Open Doors of Westfield, and the Good Samaritan Network.
Lion Mike Birk said, “We as Lions are thrilled in that we can give several local charities these small gifts to help the wonderful work each of them does. The Lions motto is ‘We Serve,’ and it is what we as Lions try to do.”
A check for $1,000 was presented to Carrie Larrison of Open Doors of Westfield, a food pantry serving Hamilton County.
Another $1,000 was presented to Westfield Youth Assistance Program. Megan Contreras and Kristina Logan accepted the donation for Westfield Youth Assistance.
A $1,000 donation to Indiana Military Veterans Hall of Fame. Kevin Ryan accepted for the Indiana Military Veterans Hall of Fame.
A further $1,000 was given to Third Phase Christian Center of Noblesville, a homeless shelter and food bank.
As a special gift, Lion Mike Birk presented $500 to Indy Edge Beep Baseball. The local sight impaired baseball team won the blind-baseball World Series in 2022 and looks strong for a repeat next year.
Lion Keith Sanborn presented a surprise check for $500 to the club’s “neighbor” at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds. The Good Samaritan Network, a collaborative of nonprofits serving the needs of Hamilton County residents who are at-risk or underserved. Nancy Chance, Founder and Executive Director, received the check for the group.
