Lee Lonzo, longtime teacher, coach, athletic director and assistant principal at Carmel High School, has won the 2019 Richard G. Lugar award for Distinguished Service to Interscholastic Athletics for his work in helping to create the IHSAA Student Advisory Committee and his leadership in bringing about a partnership between Special Olympics Indiana and the IHSAA.
Lonzo has spent his career of more than 40 years in education and youth athletics. He has served on the Indiana High School Athletics Association Board of Directors. He is currently an education consultant for the IHSAA.
He is also director of Champions Together and it was this group that arranged for statewide competition in track and field, flag football, bowling and bocce for both students with and without intellectual disabilities to represent their high schools in sports competition.
Appropriately, since Lonzo spent so many years at Carmel, the award presentation was made last Saturday night at the half-time of the Carmel-Ben Davis state championship basketball game in Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Governor Eric Holcomb presented the award.
